Local TD and Minister
of State Aine Brady has stated that MEP Liam Aylward will press for Kildare to
be included in the proposed EU Flood Compensation Package. This followed a
meeting between Minister Brady and MEP Liam Aylward this morning on the flood
damage in Kildare.
‘Many parts of
Kildare have suffered flood damage over the weekend. Last week, Irish MEP's, including
Liam Aylward, met with the Regional Policy Commissioner, Pawel Samecki, to
discuss a potential compensation package for Ireland on the basis of the flood
damage in West and South of the country.'
‘MEP Liam Aylward
informed me this morning that he will press for Kildare to be included when the
Commission is assessing the Flood Damage in Ireland to see if Ireland will
qualify for compensation under the EU Solidarity Fund. Having visited the
affected areas last night in North Kildare, I strongly believe that Kildare
should be included in any application for compensation.'
‘I understand from
Liam Aylward that the Commissioner is organising a mission to assess the flood
damage in Ireland and it is important that Kildare be included when this
assessment takes place.'
‘The EU's Solidarity
Fund was set up in 2002 to help member states deal with the uninsurable costs
of natural disasters and the Government is confident that its application for
Solidarity Funding will be favourably considered in Brussels.' Concluded
Minister Brady.
