Deputy Aine
Brady has been informed by the Minster for Energy, Eamon Ryan TD, that a total
of €15m will be allocated to the Warmer Homes Schemes for the period 2008 and
2009.
‘The Warmer Homes Scheme aims to improve the energy
efficiency and comfort conditions of homes occupied by low-income
households,' stated Deputy Brady.
‘It is administered by Sustainable Energy
Ireland and provides funding, through community based organisations, to those on
low income for the installation of energy efficiency measures in their homes.'
‘Energy efficiency improvements include the upgrading of the fabric of
the building with attic insulation, cavity wall insulation, draught proofing the
home and provision of lagging jackets.'
‘Homes that receive the full
suite of available measures under the current scheme will have the potential to
achieve energy savings of up to 50%.'
‘The Government, together with the ESB and
Bord Gais will in total provide €15m towards the scheme.
‘The Government
recently announced an 11% increase in the value of the fuel allowance, bringing
it to €20 per week from next January. The duration of the fuel season is also
being extended by another two weeks from April 2009, bringing it to 32 weeks in
total.'
‘These measures will assist Low Income Families during these
challenging times. If energy prices continue to drop in 2009, these
announcements will be all the more beneficial,' concluded Deputy Brady who spoke
on the Social Welfare Bill in the Dail last week.
