October 2008 – Older people reassured regarding additional benefits - Brady

The Minister for Finance, Brian Lenihan TD has confirmed that the entitlement of older people to free travel and other benefits will continue to apply for the duration of this Government according to local Fianna Fail TD, Áine Brady.

"Older people are entitled to free travel, free electricity allowances, free television licence and free telephone line rental and will retain these benefits for the duration of this Government."

"In addition to this, the Minister also confirmed that the thresholds announced in relation to the medical card for those over 70 years of age will be reviewed annually to take cost of living increases into account over the life-time of this Government."

"The last week or so has been a distressing time for many older people as they worried about their medical cards and the loss of other benefits. I am heartily sorry for the distress caused to my older constituents. Older people should be aware that 95% of them will receive a medical card now and their other benefits are secured for the lifetime of this Government," concluded Deputy Brady.
