October 2008 – Maternity and adoptive allowance increases to benefit young families - Brady

There is good news in this year's budget for young families as they benefit from increases in maternity and adoptive allowances according to local Fianna Fail T.D. Deputy Áine Brady.

"This year resources are being targeted to those who need it most and the Government has prioritised young families with an increase of €8.50 bringing the weekly rate up to €230.30."

"In the last number of budgets, we have increased maternity and adoptive allowance to increase the options for new parents and make it possible for them to remain at home with their new children for longer."

"We also increased maternity leave over the last number of budgets so that mothers of new-born children can now take a full six months paid and four and a half months unpaid leave."

"Budgetary pressures were severe this year so the Minister for Finance has had to make some very tough decisions to ensure that public finances were secured but we were determined to ensure that those who needed it most will benefit from this budget."

"Welcoming a new child to the family is an exciting time, but it is also can cause financial stress for young parents and I am confident that the increase in maternity and adoptive allowance will make a difference to young families," concluded Deputy Brady.
