January 6800 – Good news for bank customers as Minister extends guarantee - Brady

Kildare North Fianna Fail T.D. Áine Brady has welcomed the news that the Minister for Finance, Brian Lenihan T.D. has extended the bank guarantee to certain foreign banks operating in Ireland.

"The Minister has confirmed that Ulster Bank, First Active, Halifax Bank of Scotland, IIB Bank and Postbank will be eligible for the Government's bank guarantee scheme."

"The Guarantee Scheme is in the advanced stage of drafting and will be before the Dail shortly."

"The Minister has indicated to me that there will be additional limitations to these foreign banks."

"The UK Government has intervened in the UK banking market also but it is good news for Irish customers of these banks who have been worried about their money in recent weeks," concluded Deputy Brady.
