Deputy Aine Brady has welcomed the increase in the annual Respite Care Grant for carers, which has increased by €200 to €1,700, and is applicable from Thursday 5th of June.
'Over the last two years, I have met with the Minister for Finance and lobbied to improve the conditions for our carers. '
'The work of carers needs to be recognised and acknowledged and this is one support measure that is important. The Respite Care Grant, which is not means tested, is paid automatically to any carer who is in receipt of Carer's Allowance and Carer's Benefit. It is available to all carers providing full-time carer and attention to an older person or a person with disability.'
'If carers provide full-time care for more than one person, they are entitled to €1,700 in respect of each person that they are caring for. Full details on carers entitlements can be got from the Carers Association in Naas or Carers Ireland on 1 850 24 07 24, or the Department of Social Affairs on 1890 66 22 44.' concluded Deputy Brady who re-iterated her commitment to working on behalf of carers.
