June 2008 – Brady encourages engagement in Constitutional Amendment on Children

Kildare North Fianna Fail T.D. Áine Brady has been appointed to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Constitutional Amendment on Children and is urging interested parties and members of the public to engage in the public consultation being held by the Committee.

"The Committee will examine the Twenty-Eighth Amendment of the Constitution Bill 2007 to acknowledge and affirm the rights of all children."

"It will provide for the legal authority for the adoption of children who have been in care for a long period and will provide for all children to be eligible for voluntary adoption."

"The priority is to ensure the best outcomes for children whether that relates to adoption, fostering or taking them into care if they are at risk."

"The Committee is keen to hear the views of interested groups and members of the public on these important issues around child safety and care contained in the Orders of Reference of the Joint Committee which can be found at the Oireachtas Website (www.oireachtas.ie) "

"In particular, submissions are invited to consider the specific wording set out in the Bill as published and suggestions made as to any amendments. Submissions should be made in writing only to: Clerk to the Joint Committee on the Constitutional Amendment on Children, Kildare House, Kildare Street, Dublin 2 or by e-mail to: childamend@oireachtas.ie."

"I look forward to meeting with my colleagues on the Committee over the coming weeks and months to work on this important issue," concluded Deputy Brady.
