Deputy Aine Brady has been informed by the Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Michael Kitt TD, that €800,000 has been approved for the Community Smoke Alarm Scheme nationwide.
'The Smoke Alarm Scheme is a 2 year initiative to install smoke alarms in vulnerable households nationwide and is administered by the local authorities with assistance from the voluntary sector.' stated Deputy Brady.
'In 2007, local authorities typically purchased 500 alarms (2 per household) and this fund was used to recoup the local authorities in respect of the costs incurred.'
'Given the success of the scheme the funding has now been increased by 60% on last years level and it will allow us enhance our community based fire prevention strategy.' concluded Deputy Brady who was also informed that Kildare Co Co would receive an allocation to purchase a new fire applicance as part of a €10 national investment in our fire applicances.
