July 2008 – EU proposal to encourage children to eat more fruit welcome - Brady

The European Commission has put forward a proposal to establish an EU scheme to provide free fruit and vegetable to school children according to local Fianna Fail T.D. Áine Brady.

"The proposal comes following discussions on the reform of the EU Fruit and Vegetables regime."

"It has been proposed that Member States opting to engage in the scheme will match the EU funding and set up additional national strategies including educational and awareness raising initiatives."

"It is only right that we should be encouraging children to eat more fruit and vegetables and formulate healthy eating habits at a time when childhood obesity is on the rise."

"The proposal for this scheme has gone to the European Council and Parliament and it is aimed to have the legislation adopted in time for the 2009/2010 school year."

"The national ‘Food Dudes' programme is already running in national schools to encourage children to try and enjoy fruit and vegetables."

"I am hopeful that the EU Scheme to provide free fruit and vegetables will work successfully in conjunction with the ‘Food Dudes' programme and will provide children with the tools form healthy eating habits for life," concluded Deputy Brady.
